17th August 2022, Ireland: Deliveroo Ireland can reveal that Sunday has overtaken Saturday as the most popular day of the week to make an order on the popular app. Deliveroo data reveals that there are now 15% more orders on a Sunday then there are a Saturday, which used to be the most popular day of the week to order a takeaway.

Deliveroo is attributing this shift in behaviour to an increase in the ‘Sunday Scaries’ otherwise known as ‘The Fear’. For those not in the know, ‘Sunday Scaries’ is a term made popular by Millennials and Gen z that refers to the feeling of dread that many people experience the day before heading back to work after the weekend. Ever since the pandemic, the Sunday Scaries have gone mainstream. This tingle of trepidation hits most folks when the weekend starts to wind down and angst about what’s waiting in their inbox tomorrow creeps in.

It’s no surprise then that Irish folk are trying to save time on a Sunday by ordering takeaways. As would be expected they are reaching for comfort food. The three most popular orders Deliveroo Ireland on a Sunday are: Burrito/Burrito Bowl, Cheeseburger, Margherita Pizza.

While it may be tempting to reach for more hearty takeaway classics, Heather Leeson, Registered Nutritional Therapist and Director of Glenville Nutrition in Dublin, cautions that food can have a profound effect on mood and wellbeing. In other words, it's important to make healthy choices when you’re feeling the Sunday Scaries set in.

Heather Leeson, Registered Nutritional Therapist and Director of Glenville Nutrition: “In health research, the role having a healthy gut plays in improving mood is pretty hot right now. Researchers have identified a connection between the gut and the brain. It's thought that this connection can impact mood, and the way you think. As such, if you’re suffering from a case of the Sunday Scaries, resist the urge to eat takeaway classics like chicken nuggets and pizza. Opt instead for choices rich in prebiotic fibre found in vegetables, fruit, pulses, wholegrains, nuts and seeds to provide food for beneficial bacteria to set yourself up for the week. Deliveroo has tons of healthy options - there’s even an entire ‘healthy’ section of the app. Don’t forget about healthy fats as well - over 60% of our brain is made up of fat, especially Omega 3 fatty acids. These healthy fats make it easier for serotonin (the neurotransmitter that helps with mood, appetite and sleep) to pass through the membranes of our brain cells. Omega 3 rich foods such as salmon and mackerel are ideal for a wellness filled Sunday!”

Heather’s top mood boosting takeaway picks on Deliveroo are:

Sensational wholegrain salads: Dubliners can try the ‘Super Guacabowle’ from Sprout or the new ‘Simple Bowl’ from Nutbutter. They are salads that are far from boring.

Vegtastic curries: There are tons of amazing Indians across Ireland available on Deliveroo. Try Chaska or Kerala Kitchen in Dublin, Thali Nepalese and Indian in Cork or Falguni Indian in Galway

Pulse packed falafel: Chickpeas are packed full of prebiotic fibre making falafel a great option for fighting the Sunday Scaries. Order from Keshk in Dublin or Umi Falafel in Dublin and Cork

Omega filled sashimi: Mood boosting salmon sashimi is an ideal choice for a Sunday night takeaway. Try from Musashi or Aoki Sushi in Dublin, WA SUSHI in Galway or Sakura Japanese Cuisine in Cork
